No Libel in Our Clients Statements, Fani-Kayode’s Lawyers Tell Lai Mohammed

Reports

Following the warning by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to sue him if he does not retract a statement he made on Channels television in June, attorneys of former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode have written to the lawyers of APC National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed telling them that the statements made by Fani-Kayode do not amount to libel.

Fani-Kayode had alleged in the interview that APC ― through its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed― condemned the Federal Government for proscribing the terror group, Boko Haram.

In the letter dated 5th July, Ahmed Raji & Co., representing Fani-Kayode said that they have reviewed the interview and have found no libellous statement in it.

“We have had the privilege of viewing the tape containing the interview and we are unable to agree with you that the comment of our client in the interview amounts to libel against your client,” the letter read.

“You will agree with us that the greatest challenge facing our country today is the Boko Haram problem; hence it calls for concerted efforts from all (and most especially leaders) to ensure that our country is not destroyed. Our client’s views are nothing but fair and legitimate comments from a concerned leader and for which he should be commended for his patriotism.”

The attorneys pointed out that Fani-Kayode’s statement was directed at anyone connected with Boko Haram in any way, saying such ones should be made to answer.

They urged Mohammed’s lawyers, M.A Banire and associates to reappraise the matter and advise their client accordingly.

Mohammed had lashed out at Fani-Kayode in a statement he issued in Lagos last Monday, challenging him to produce any APC statement condemning government’s war on the terror group, if he was so sure the APC issued such.

"I have caused my attorneys to formally write both Fani-Kayode and Channel television, where he made his allegation, to retract the statement and apologise, failing which I will sue for defamation of character,” Mohammed had said.

He had stated in the press release that the position of APC on Boko Haram has been well articulated and at no time has the party condemned the government for proscribing it.
