No New Negotiation with FG, ASUU Insists

Reports

There would be no new negotiation with the Federal Government if the previous agreement is not implemented, the Academic Staff Union of Universities said on Thursday.

According to ASUU, Nigeria votes the least budget to education yet pumps huge sums to irrelevant projects that have no bearing on research and development, unlike many other African countries who allocate sufficient funding to education annually. They maintained that the union would not budge in its demands for full implementation of the 2009 agreement.

The union made this position known while speaking during a symposium titled Education, Research and Development in Nigeria, held at the Paul Hendrickse Hall of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan.

It observed that in comparison to academics, local government councillors earn far more than professors while legislators are thrice as paid as the professors who trained them in schools.

Those who spoke on behalf of ASUU were the likes of National Treasurer and former Chairman of the UI branch of the union, Dr. Ademola Aremu; incumbent Chairman, Dr. Segun Ajiboye; former Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Prof. Millicent Obajimi; and Dr. Abass Abdulsalaam.
