Gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram Islamist sect on Monday attacked the Abuja headquarters of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force. Police sources said that two policemen on guard were shot and that the Inspector General of Police is expected to issue a statement later in the day.

While the invasion was reported to have been met by significant resistance from the security men, there are unconfirmed reports of the freeing of suspected members of the sect who were in detention at the  facility.

Spokesman for the Nigeria Police Force, Mr. Frank Mba, has already confirmed the incident to the media.

As at the time of filing this report, the Apo area of Abuja where the attack held had already been cordoned off; and the Police has declared a manhunt for the attackers, who are thought to still be within reach

Monday’s attack will be seen as the highlight of renewed vigour of Boko Haram in taking its war to security agencies, coming just a day after men suspected to be its members orchestrated suicide bombing attacks at a military protestant church inside the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna, killing 11 people and injuring another 30, as at first count.
